Subject: Latin Place Names File
Thanks for the additional resource. There are two other very major Latin
placename files on the Net; from the RomanSites-L archives:

Useful! list of 817 European towns with their modern and Latin names. This
should only be used, however, in the Latin-to-modern direction, since many of
the Latin names are mediaeval, and some are not Latin at all (e.g.
_Sainctes_): i.e., if you want a Roman-period name when you know the modern
one, this is not reliable; but if you have a Roman name and need to know the
modern name, with luck it may be on this list. NB: see also much larger list
at RS 57-3

:CSTR: For now, Britain, Germany and Spain; France & Italy to come.
>> Britain: 209 places are listed. Not all towns, some are rivers and
ocean features; 6 are linked offsite to the appropriate website. One
idiosyncratic but interesting link to the writing tablets of Vindolanda.
Each placename equivalence is given sources: Ptolemy's Geography, Notitia
Dignitatum, Ravenna Itinerary, Antonine Itinerary, Peutinger Tables,
epigraphic sources, "other literature"
A spotcheck (Britain, ancient names beginning with G) against Orbis Latinus
(RS 57-3) shows this to be a valuable resource: 4 places are not found in
Orbis, 2 match or are variants, 1 is different.
>> Germany: 30 places
No sources yet; appears to include some mediaeval names.
>> Spain (should be "Iberia", since Portugal included): 128 places
No sources yet.
