Single copies of this directory from its networked sources, or of specific
entries from their networked sources, may be made for internal purposes,
personal use, or study by an individual, an individual library, or an

2. Scope of the Directory
******
This directory contains descriptions of electronic conferences (e-conferences)
on topics of interest to scholars and professionals for use in their scholarly,
pedagological and professional activities.
E-conference is the umbrella term that includes discussion lists, Internet
interest groups, Usenet newsgroups, forums, etc. Since the 9th revision
we have begun including text based virtual reality systems known as MUDS,
MOO'S, Muck's, Mushes, etc. that are primarily for scholarly, pedagogical or
professional activities.
The e-conferences in this Directory are all accessible via Internet services,
including email, Usenet News Readers, telnet, gopher, or www.
We have used our own judgment in deciding what is of scholarly, pedagological
or professional interest, but always consider any advice or argument about our
decisions. We have placed the entries into categories by deciding the
*dominant* academic subject area of the electronic conference.
Where possible, the information in each record has been checked for currency
and accuracy by contacting the moderators or other contact person.
We chose the term *moderator* as the umbrella term to describe: contact
person, coordinator, listowner, editor, moderator, etc.; in other words, the
Human in Charge.
Topic descriptions are taken in whole or part from the descriptions
provided by each moderator.
The basic fields are described as follows:
____________________
Discussion Name: The name of the group; the listname Topic: short description
of the group; usually in the listowner's words
Subscription Address: this is the address to send your subscription address
and signoff messages to
Moderated? Does some human screen messages either by editing or by monitoring?;
Is the list set to private.
Archives: Are there archives? Where?
Contact Address: The moderator; who to contact if you have questions
Submission Address: Where to send your contributions to the group's discussion
Keywords: words to enhance retrieval of an entry in search systems
VR: The version and cutoff date for entries in this version.

6. Generic Subscription Instructions:
**********
LISTSERV, COMSERVE, LISTPROC, MAILBASE, MAILSERV
To subscribe to a LISTSERV (both Unix and IBM/VM LSOFT LISTSERV software
is in use) COMSERVE, LISTPROC, MAILBASE, or MAILSERV email distributed
e-conference send an email message addressed to the email address provided
in the "Subscription Address" field. Leave the subject line blank. The
text of the message *must* read:
SUBSCRIBE LISTNAME Yourfirstname Yourlastname Your Institution
(LISTNAME means the name of the list..e.g. if the List Name field says
LIBREF-L..the LISTNAME is LIBREF-L)
Do not include any other text and *leave the subject blank* as this is
being read by a computer program and not a person....the program just won't
understand and will bounce back your command if it is not worded as specified
above.
-REQUEST Addresses
To subscribe to e-conferences with a -REQUEST address, send an email message
to list-REQUEST _at__ host (e.g., SOC-CULTURE-GREEK-REQUEST _at__ CS.WISC.EDU). Use the
same basic directions as with the Listserv software. The -REQUEST address
gets you to the Coordinator, rather than to the membership of the entire
e-conference. Please look carefully at the entry for each list you are
interested in, to see if a -REQUEST address has been provided. Include your
name, address, and institutional affiliation in your message.
USENET NEWSGROUPS
Usenet Newsgroups are generally accessed by typing "RN" or "NN" at the
shell prompt, ready screen or $ prompt on your email account. Check with
your Computer Services People to find out what the local availability and
procedures are for access to Usenet Newsgroups.
MAJORDOMO
Send email to the majordomo _at__ site address. The text of the message should be:
subscribe listname youremailaddress
Subscription directions for other types of discussions are included with
individual entries.
See also a fine publication titled: "Discussion Lists: Mail List Manager
Commands" by James Milles, Saint Louis University Law Library.

7. Archives Access
**********
Archives are available for many discussions. On LISTSERV, COMSERVE, MAILSERV,
and MAILBASE to receive a list of files available from the server send the
command:
INDEX LISTNAME to SERVER _at__ NODEID
You can then send the message:
GET Filename Filetype to the SERVER _at__ NODEID.
(SERVER means LISTSERV or COMSERVE or MAILBASE or MAILSERV or whatever,
NODEID means the site of the server which runs the e-conference)
It is also possible to search Bitnet LISTSERV and COMSERVE discussion archives
to you. For details on archives searching:
For LISTSERV send the message:
INFO DATABASE
to a LISTSERV of your choice. (e.g. LISTSERV _at__ PSUVM)
For COMSERVE send the message
HELPFILE
to Comserve _at__ cios.llc.rpi.edu
Some discussions maintain archives available via anonymous FTP. This
is noted where available. Some archives are mentioned on other types of
Internet server, e.g. GOPHER and WWW. Use the URL provided to connect to
those archive sites.
When in doubt use the Contact Address.
