Ich moechte auf zwei neue Publikationen der letzten Wochen innerhalb unserer
"Electronic text collection LIBRARIES AND INTERNET" aufmerksam machen.
Beide sind, wie alle anderen Beitraege auch, im Hypertext-Format 
publiziert und mit zahlreichen Links ins Internet versehen.

Babiak, Ulrich: Sacherschliessung im Internet.

Diplomarbeit April 1994. Fachhochschule fuer Bibliotheks- und
Dokumentationswesen in Koeln.

ABSTRACT: 

Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit den im Internet gebraeuchlichen Methoden
zur inhaltlichen Erschliessung.
Zunaechst wird ein Ueberblick ueber die in Frage kommenden klassischen
Methoden der Sacherschliessung gegeben. Die Anwendbarkeit dieser
Methoden auf die Verhaeltnisse im Internet wird ebenso diskutiert wie die
Probleme, die einer umfassenden Erschliessung der Internet-Ressourcen
entgegenstehen.
Aus dem Bereich der Informatik werden vor allem Methoden der
Indexierung beigetragen (z.B. Archie, Veronica, WAIS). Diese werden
besprochen und untersucht. Das Bibliothekswesen beschaeftigt sich hingegen
mit Versuchen, das Internet klasierend zu erschliessen. Als Beispiel hierfuer
wird das Projekt der UB Lund besprochen.
Es wird gezeigt, dass die Systeme zur Erschliessung des Internet dessen
dynamischer Entwicklung hinterherhinken, so dass das Internet fuer die
professionelle Informationsbeschaffung noch nicht zufriedenstellend
genutzt werden kann.
Abschliessend werden Ansaetze fuer ein umfassendes Networked
Information Retrieval diskutiert, die durch eine Integration der bestehenden
Dienste die Informationssuche im wachsenden Internet komfortabler
gestalten sollen.

The objectives of the document are to provide the reader with:
a) An understanding of the history of the World-Wide Web (WWW).
b) Examples of how WWW is currently being used in a number of areas.
c) An understanding of the role of a WWW browser and examples of some
of the popular browsers.
d) An understanding of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and
examples of popular HTML authoring tools, document converters and
quality tools.
e) An understanding of the use of graphics on WWW and a review of some
of the popular graphical tools.
f) Examples of some of the popular searching tools which are available on
WWW and a review of some of the popular indexing tools.
g) An overview of WWW server software and a review of the main
functions carried out by a server.
h) Examples of extensions to the basic WWW architecture, including the
use of external browsers, running client-side and server-side applications.
i) An awareness of the legal and ethical aspects of providing a WWW
service.

The handbook also gives a number of examples of the use of WWW in the
following areas:
Campus (or community) wide information systems (CWIS); Teaching and
learning; Collaboration; Libraries; Books and magazines about WWW.
The handbook also provides pointers to a variety of sources of further
information including:
WWW mailing lists; WWW resources; National UK WWW services.

Target Audience: 
This document is intended primarily for the UK academic community. It
should be suitable for computing service or administrative staff responsible
for managing a World-Wide Web service, and for academic staff who wish
to run a departmental service. 
The document contains many screen shots, illustrations and links to
relevant resources on the Internet.
