Cochrane Switzerland and Chur University of Applied Sciences, Swiss Institute
of Information Science, are pleased to announce the following 3-day course:
Advanced search techniques and advanced search strategy design for systematic
reviews, health technology assessment and guideline development
Wed 9 October – Fri 11 October 2019, Bern, Switzerland
Early-bird registration deadline: 5 July 2019
Standard registration deadline: 7 August 2019
This three-day course will address the challenges of advanced search strategies
using different conceptual approaches and search techniques. It will also
introduce text analysis techniques such as text mining to demonstrate their
potential for developing and testing search strategies.
Objectives:
Learn and apply new search techniques to improve information retrieval
Share insights and best approaches
Discuss variations in current best practice
Target audience:
Medical / healthcare librarians, information specialists, researchers, authors
of systematic reviews and other professionals wishing to develop advanced
search strategies
Prerequisites:
Experience in searching databases such as MEDLINE / PubMed
Participants need to bring their own laptops
Good command of English
Contents:
The workshop includes presentations, small group and plenary discussions and
interactive sessions allowing the participants to practise the concepts and
methods presented during the course.

Participation fee:
CHF 900.00 (early-bird registration up to 5 July inclusive is CHF 800.00),
including course documentation and coffee breaks
Number of participants: up to 25
Please note:
Candidates will receive a participation confirmation after the early-bird
registration deadline. The participation fee must be settled at least three
weeks prior to the course by means of the invoice that will be sent to all
candidates having received a participation confirmation. We reserve the right
to cancel the course if there are too few registrations.
Any withdrawal within three weeks before the course is subject to a
cancellation charge amounting to 50% of the participation fee; however, the
entire fee remains due to Cochrane Switzerland in the case of a withdrawal
within one week prior to the course.
Certificate:
A certificate of attendance will be issued to participants who complete the
course.

Presenter bios:
Julie Glanville, Associate Director, York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC),
University of York, UK.
Julie is a qualified librarian who has been working in the field of systematic
reviews for more than 25 years. Since 2008 she has coordinated YHEC's
information and review services to customers who require literature searches
and reviews of all types. Julie manages reviews ranging from rapid reviews to
systematic reviews to inform submissions to reimbursement agencies such as
NICE. Julie also manages indirect and mixed treatment comparisons.
Before joining YHEC, Julie was Associate Director and Information Service
Manager at the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) at the University of
York for fourteen years. In this role Julie managed information support for
systematic reviews and technology assessments within CRD and to external
customers, and managed CRD’s NHS Economic Evaluation Database.
Julie is a co-convenor of the Cochrane Information Retrieval Methods Group, a
co-author of the Cochrane Handbook chapter on searching for evidence and has
contributed to the development of systematic review guidance for several
organisations including the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination and the
European Food Safety Authority. Julie is an Associate Editor for the journal
Research Synthesis Methods. Julie’s research interests are in search filter
design and appraisal, text mining applications in systematic reviewing and the
efficient identification of research evidence for systematic reviews, economic
evaluations and models and health technology assessments.
Carol Lefebvre is an independent information consultant. She was a founder of
The Cochrane Collaboration and was previously the Senior Information Specialist
at the UK Cochrane Centre, where she worked from its inception in 1992 to 2012.
She is Co-Convenor of the Cochrane Information Retrieval Methods Group, serves
on the Cochrane Methods Executive and is lead author on the searching chapter
of The Cochrane Handbook.
She was awarded an M.Sc. in Library and Information Science from the University
of Loughborough (UK) in 1985 and an Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered
Institute of Library and Information Professionals in 2007. She now focusses on
training and consultancy in information retrieval for evidence synthesis, such
as systematic reviews, health technology assessment and guideline development.
She is also a regular contributor to the Peer Reviewing Search Strategies
section of SuRe Info (Summarized Research in Information Retrieval for Health
Technology Assessment).
