Die New Yorker Public Library-Systeme waren die ersten, die ein freies 
Filmstreamingangebot für öffentlichen Bibliotheken angeboten hatten, ebenso wie 
einige andere US-amerikanische Großststadtbibliotheken. Der Schwerpunkt des 
Angebots von 30.000 Titeln bei Kanopy, anfangs ein Dienst für den educational 
market der Universitätsbibliotheken, liegt auf Dokumentationen. Die Zahl der 
Lizenzen für Spielfilme ist sehr begrenzt. Auch die immer wieder 
herausgestellte Criterion Collection scheint nur mit dem kleinen Pool der 
eigenen Lizenzen des alten Janus Filmbestands vertreten zu sein. Wer zum 
Beispiel "This is Spinal Tap" von Rob Reiner (out of print) sucht, bekommt das 
Massagevideo "Massage Therapy and Spinal Manipulation" vorgeschlagen.
 
"Kanopy’s catalog includes films licensed from HBO Documentaries, A24, Bleecker 
Street, the Criterion Collection, German non-profit The Goethe-Institut and San 
Francisco MOMA. Titles available on Kanopy include Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” 
Matt Ross’ “Captain Fantastic,” Oscar-nominated “Loving Vincent,” Federico 
Fellini’s “8 1/2,” and Taika Waititi’s “Boy,” according to the company’s site.
As of last month, San Francisco-based Kanopy said it was available to more than 
50 million public library users and more than 3,000 college and university 
libraries across the U.S., Canada, Australia and the U.K.
Founded in 2008, Kanopy last year received an investment from private-equity 
firm L Squared Capital Partners." (Variety)

Schon bei der Einführung des Streamingdienstes für öffentliche Bibliotheken 
hatten amerikanische Filmkritiker darauf hingewiesen, dass ein umfassender 
Bestand der Filmgeschichte für das allgemeine Publikum nur in den DVD- und 
Blu-ray-Sammlungen öffentlicher Bibliotheken zu haben ist.
