We are looking to recruit a new Head of Research Infrastructure Services, based
in either Boston Spa (£45-55K) or London (£48-58K). [Diese Umrechungen sind
immer etwas problematisch, aber das Nettogehalt liegt irgendwo zwischen A14 und
A15.]
Closing date: 2nd April 2018
Interviews: 20 April 2018

The British Library is embarking on an ambitious programme to modernise the
services it offers to individual researchers, research organisations and within
the global research environment. In addition to improving discovery of and
access to British Library collections (on-site and on-line/remotely) this
includes activities underpinning open science globally and shared digital
services. The Head of Research Services will take a key role in this process,
by engaging with the global research (infrastructure) environment to identify
opportunities for the British Library to add value. Leading a team of research
services experts, the post holder will scope and plan new services and service
enhancements and work with technology providers (vendors, partners and British
Library IT services) to implement them. The Head of RIS will also contribute at
a senior level to the on-going development and implementation of the overall
British Library research services strategy and lead the Research Infrastructure
Services section of the Research Services department.
The Research Infrastructure section was set up last autumn as part of a broader
restructure in Research Services. It consists of 12 posts organised in small
teams (Discovery & Access, Scholarly Communications, Research Data,
Repositories, the EU-funded FREYA project), with five posts currently not yet
filled. With the imminent retirement of the current post holder we are looking
for a new Head to lead on the British Library’s research infrastructure
activities. This is an exciting opportunity to work at a senior level at one of
the world’s leading libraries and, for the right person, to make an impact at a
global level.
The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of the changing nature of
research and scholarly communications as well as of the services libraries
provide in this context. They will be able to grasp the potential of current
and emerging technology solutions at a strategic level and to turn that
understanding into concepts for services and service enhancements that meet
user needs. As a good communicator, they will be able to work across the
Library, with partners and technology providers to deliver successful projects
and services and to represent the British Library internationally.
In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our
pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can
become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes 20.9%.
Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible
working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the
week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top
of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.
I am happy to answer questions or discuss the role informally and
confidentially.
Best wishes,
Torsten
