The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked
scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is
located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France),
Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
The EMBL Szilard Library is a scientific library with extensive on-line
resources and databases, subscribing to 250 (mostly electronic) active
journals, 70 active monographic series and a collection of around 10,000 books.
The library serves the 900 scientists working at EMBL and liaises with staff in
three countries. The library uses the XML based library system by Inmagic and a
self-tailored in-house classification system. The small library team of two
enjoys supporting researchers in a pro-active and flexible manner within the
framework of a very international research organisation.
Applications are invited from students/graduates of library and information
studies (LIS) for a three months traineeship (mid-June to mid-September). The
traineeship offers an opportunity to gain a first-hand experience of working in
a small academic library, getting involved in projects and contributing to
additional library services. In particular there will be training in the
provision of library services using the library system Inmagic (journal & book
collection management, document delivery etc), data review & updates, stock
review, updating the library webpage (using a CMS), as well as support in
assessing marketing tools and strategy development.
The ideal candidate is currently doing/has completed a degree in LIS, has good
interpersonal, customer and IT skills and pays attention to detail. Working
knowledge of English is essential.
