CALL FOR PAPERS
SESSION hosted by the Section for Library Buildings and Equipment
in San Juan, Puerto Rico
at the 77th World Library and Information Congress on the
13-18 August 2011
Session title: Sustainability issues in the design of libraries: the importance
of creating environmentally responsible library facilities and spaces in the
21st century
Today we are facing the global challenge of growing energy consumption and
depletion of resources. Therefore, it is increasingly important to integrate
sustainable thinking into the planning of new or refurbished library buildings.
Examples are buildings which incorporate features such as rainwater
harvesting, use of natural lighting, heating and ventilation, use of recyclable
and environmentally-friendly materials.
The Library Buildings & Equipment Standing Committee is looking for papers
which discuss innovative ways of reducing the ecological footprint of library
buildings in a cost-effective and efficient way. We are particularly
interested in the way architects and clients respond to the specific demands of
their region. Possible topics to be addressed might include how library
buildings can cope with extremes of temperature, challenging weather conditions
and future climate change but all ideas are welcome. We would like the
programme to have a balance between theoretical approaches and best practice
case studies of sustainability in library design.
The theme of WLIC 2011, libraries beyond libraries: integration, innovation and
information for all, should provide the context of the presentation.
The following should be provided:
- name and institution of presenter(s)
- an abstract of the paper describing the project, campaign or research carried
out (1 page, up to 350 words) preferably in English
- relevant biographical information of author(s)/presenter(s)
Send your proposals by 7th, January 2010 via e-mail to the chair of the LBE
section Karen Latimer (k.latimer@xxxxxxxxx).
The abstracts will be reviewed and selected by a Review Committee. The paper
can be given at the congress in any of IFLA’s official languages. Successful
proposals will be identified and announced by January 31, 2011.
If a paper is selected authors must commit to presenting it in Puerto Rico.
All presenters and their papers will be listed in the final IFLA Programme.
Therefore presenters must forward the full text of their papers by April 15,
2010 to allow time for review and for preparation of translations. The time
allowed for the presentation will be 20 minutes. Papers should be no longer
than 20 pages.
Expenses:
Please note that it is the presenters’ responsibility to find funding for their
participation (registration fee, travel, accommodation and associated costs).
IFLA is not in a position to fund attendance at the Congress.
