Einladung Library Science Talks

Sehr geehrte Kolleginenn und Kollegen,

wir laden Sie herzlich zu zwei Veranstaltungen der Reihe *Library Science
Talks* im Oktober ein.

Die Deutsche Bibliothek bietet erstmals in Kooperation mit der
Schweizerischen Landesbibliothek zwei Veranstaltungen aus der Vortrags- und
Gespraechsreihe *Library Science Talks* an. Die Reihe wird jaehrlich von der
Schweizerischen Landesbibliothek, der AILIS Association of International
Librarians and Information Specialists und der CERN Scientific Information
Service gemeinsam organisiert. Die Deutsche Bibliothek plant, sich in
Zukunft aktiv daran zu beteiligen und auch im Jahr 2002 Vorträge von
internationalen Spezialisten anzubieten.
Damit soll den Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus Bibliotheken,
Dokumentationseinrichtungen und Archiven eine zusaetzliche Gelegenheit
geboten werden, ihr Wissen im Austausch mit Informationsspezialisten zu
diskutieren, zu ergaenzen und Kontakte zu knuepfen.
Die Vortraege und Gespraeche behandeln aktuelle und zentrale Themen der
internationalen Bibliotheks- und Informationswelt.

Die Teilnahme ist kostenlos.

Ed Pentz: CrossRef (www.crossref.org <http://www.crossref.org>). The
collaborative reference linking service

Abstract: 
References are at the heart of scholarly journal publishing.
Through references, authors - experts in their fields - direct readers to
relevant articles that may on the surface appear unrelated. It's imperative
that scholarly publishers link their references and that secondary services
and libraries provide links to full text articles.  In order to make
broad-based linking scalable across a wide range of primary publishers,
secondary publishers, abstracting and indexing services and libraries
requires an infrastructure for linking.  Scholarly publishers created
CrossRef, run by the non-profit Publishers International Linking
Association, Inc, to develop and run a system that enables publishers to
assign unique identifiers - Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) - to articles
and collect standardized metadata so that the identifiers can be retrieved
using bibliographic data. Once the basic infrastructure for linking is in
place, enhanced linking and discovery services can be created. CrossRef uses
open standards and is working with libraries and secondary publishers on
providing sophisticated services for retrieving scientific articles. On key
area that CrossRef is working on is Localized Linking using the OpenURL
Framework.


Svein Arne Brygfjeld: Harvesting and archiving the Web - The Nordic Web
Archive (<http://nwa.nb.no>)

Abstract: 
The national libraries of the five Nordic countries have established a
cooperation to find a common way of handling legal deposit of information
available to the public on the Internet. One of the main activities in this
cooperation is the Nordic Web Archive project. This project aims at finding
principles, methods and technology for access to web archives on a national
level. The project started at the end of 2000, and it is supposed to be
finished at the end of 2001. Each national library will establish their own
web archive, based on their own choice of implementation. Through the NWA
project, one will make one implementation of software, which is not archive
dependent. As such, the software may be used to interface all the different
archives in question. For the user, the access interface shall offer search,
browsing and navigation. Cooperation with Fast Search and Transfer and the
use of their search engine technology shall meet the challenge represented
by handling access to archives containing many million documents.
