advancement of education, research, international leadership and global
citizenship. IUB will open with the first undergraduate semester in
September 2001."
The International University Bremen (IUB) is building a team to help create
a state-of-the-art research library.
The successful applicants for the positions below must be energetic,
innovative, and able to relocate to Bremen, Germany as soon as possible but
no later than August 1, 2001. They must have good English language skills,
both written and oral, must work well with others, be self-motivated, and
able to thrive in an environment of growth and change. Relevant experience,
professional or paraprofessional is desirable. A graduate degree in library
or information science or other relevant professional degree is required.
It is also expected that each person, according to the position applied
for, will be technologically savvy about online integrated library systems,
Web technologies and authoring tools, cataloging and bibliographic
standards and practices, multimedia equipment, software, materials, and
practices, scanning and presentation software, and other technologies
available for supporting faculty and students in their teaching, learning,
and research whether in the library or the classroom.
The following positions -- Access Services Librarian, Library Technician,
Reference Librarian, and Technical Services Librarian -- are now open and
available for immediate hiring.
The Access Services Librarian will be responsible for circulation,
interlibrary loan, document delivery, stack maintenance, and course
reserves, traditional and electronic. This person will implement and manage
electronic tools for providing all services and will work closely with
bibliographic utilities, libraries and library consortia, and vendors in
order to be ready on IUB's opening day of classes.
Library Technician (Paraprofessional)
The library technician will support the activities of both access and
technical services, working closely with librarians, vendors, faculty,
students, and staff. Supervision of student assistants will be part of the
responsibilities. Duties will include book and journal ordering and
receiving, checking out and in of library materials, providing interlibrary
loan and document delivery using Ariel, OCLC (or the like), and training
students to help in these and other activities
Reference Librarian
The reference librarian will provide traditional reference services (some
evenings and weekends) and will participate in the creation and development
of print and electronic general and reference collections, serve as liaison
to faculty for teaching and research programs, develop and promote
instructional programs in information literacy, participate in teaching
general and subject-specific instruction sessions, and design instructional
materials in all formats.
The Technical Services Librarian will be responsible for acquisitions and
cataloging for serials and monographs, both print and electronic. This
person will help implement an online integrated library system and develop
membership in a bibliographic utility. The incumbent will also provide
fiscal management of collections expenditures, coordinate licensing of
electronic products, and work with a variety of vendors to provide an
opening day collection for IUB.
