die American Library Association definiert "Digital Libraries" wie folgt:

"Digital libraries are organizations that provide the resources, including
the specialized staff, to select, structure, offer intellectual access to,
interpret, distribute, preserve the integrity of, and ensure the
persistence over time of collections of digital works so that they are
readily and economically available for use by a defined community or set of
communities."

Diese Definition ist unabhängig von der Art der Inhalte. Es kann es sich
dabei sowohl um um Volltexte (elektronische Zeitschriften und Bücher,
Preprints, Online-Dissertationen) als auch Fakten, bibliographische Daten
(OPACS), Clearinghouses oder Subject Catalogs handeln.
Zentral finde ich den Aspekt, dass es sich um eine Organisation handelt und
nicht etwa nur um ein Informationssystem. Dies kriegt die
(Informations)arbeit  (Erschließung, Strukturierung etc.) und die
Arbeitsbeziehungen der Beteiligten ebenso in den Blick, wie das
sozio-ökonomische Umfeld, in dem diese Organisation steht.
