Description
The fundamental transformation imposed upon post-industrial society by
technological developments also applies to the basic handling of
historical
sources housed in libraries, archives and museums and their public
accessibility.
Access to knowledge traditionally guaranteed in catalogues of libraries
and
archives and in the exhibitions and classification of museum holdings
nowadays appears at first sight as an endlessly slow, wearisome and
economically inefficient process in comparison to the potential offered
by
computer databases with their multi-dimensional access and prospects of
internet navigation.
As in hardly any other area, those institutions earlier prized as oases
of
rest and eternal keeping, where time stands still, have now been hit by
a
hurricane of technological innovation and doubtful scepticism towards
the
future justification of their traditional methods of preservation and
presentation.
Within the framework of a two-day conference organised by the
International
Research Centre for Cultural Sciences and the Austrian National Library,
leading representatives from the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the
British Library, the Library of Congress, the Danish National Library
and
the Austrian National Library, will discuss the changing role of
national
libraries in the Age of Information. The conference includes
presentation
of digitalisation projects
