BULISC '98: New Links, addresses one of the major issues that will confront libraries in the next few years: how far will and should partnerships and cross-sectoral collaboration go? What are the driving factors?
The Conference will open on the afternoon of Wednesday 15th July and close with lunch on Friday 17th July 1998.
The first afternoon features a strategic overview from the public and academic perspectives given by Martin Molloy (Derbyshire County Libraries) and John Blagden (Cranfield University).
The second day has two parallel strands that focus on particular factors: The "Actual" and "Virtual" Library.
The "Actual" Strand examines the variety of LIPs and the effect of Purchasing Consortia. An overview of LIPs by Ian Malley will be followed by contributions from, amongst others, John Sumsion and Hatrics. Karin Richter will report on UCE's project: "People Flows".
The Consortia section will begin with Jo Pye presenting the initial results of Bournemouth University's BLRIC study, followed by contributions which include: Jenny Varney of Buckinghamshire County Library, Andrew McDonald from the University of Sunderland and Susan Wright of the Southern Universities Purchasing Consortium.
The "Virtual" Strand addresses the impact of the electronic library with contributions that include: Mark Clark and John Blunden-Ellis on the collaboration between BLCMP and CALIM on Z39.50, Margaret Sheridan will discuss Unity as an ILL and general community resource, a review of eLib projects and a particular emphasis on the BUILDER project will also be represented. Under the heading Electronic Access there will be papers from Susy Woodhouse of EARL who will review electronic access in the public library setting, Paul Harwood will give a presentation on NESLI and Michael Long will examine progress on digitisation.
On the final morning Frances Hendrix will draw together the Conference themes to prompt a final debate led by Michael Messenger as the "enthusiast" and David Ball as the "sceptic".
Social events include an evening's sail along the beautiful Dorset coast and the Conference Dinner.
Bournemouth is a premier holiday resort and international conference centre, with excellent shopping and entertainment facilities. The town is just 100 miles from London and its airports, well served by the main road and rail networks.
