Die Vorauswahl zum irischen IMPAC-Preis, mit 100.000 irischen Pfund
(rund 250.000 Mark) die hoechstdotierte Auszeichnung fuer ein einzelnes
erzaehlerisches Werk, haelt in diesem Jahr einige Ueberraschungen bereit.
Mit Herta Muellers "The Land of Green Plums" wurde erstmals die
Uebersetzung eines deutschen Romans nominiert. Zu der zehn Titel
umfassenden Auswahlliste zaehlen ferner "Alias Grace" von Margaret
Atwood, "Imaginings of Sand" von Andre Brink, "The Counting House"
von David Dabydeen, "The Glade Within the Grove" von David Foster,
"Die Autobiographie meiner Mutter" von Jamaica Kincaid, "Salt" von
Earl Lovelace, "Ein Nashorn fuer den Papst" von Lawrence Norfolk,
"Letzte Runde" von Graham Swift sowie "The Englishman's Boy" von
Guy Vanderhaeghe. Die Entscheidung der Jury, der neben dem irischen
Lyriker Paul Muldoon noch Greg Gatenby aus Kanada, Margo Glantz
aus Mexiko, Al Young aus den USA und Marta Tikkanen aus Finnland
angehört, fiel am 18. Mai.
