Liebe Intet-Bibler,

der neue Titel von Cliff Stoll (der vor einigen Jahren von Berkeley 
aus Hacker fuer das KGB in Hannover lokalisierte) soll im Internet 
schon heftig diskutiert worden sein.

Er heisst "Silicon Snake Oil" und wurde im Library Journal vom 1 
March 1995 rezensiert, mit Leseprobe und Telefoninterview mit Cliff 
Stoll - so richtig verkaufsfoerdernd eben (S. 100 f.) 

Nach diesen Angaben duerfte das Kapitel ueber Bibliotheken  
manch einen provozieren -   
in der manchmal "ueberhitzten" Euphorie fuer Internet im 
allgemeinen und im besonderen in Bibliotheken vielleicht aber auch 
mal ganz gut, dass ein Insider einmal etwas "gegen den Strich 
buerstet". 
Sofern greifbar, sicher eine passende Lektuere fuers Sommerloch.

Auszug aus dem Interview::
"It's a crime that libraries, with their limited budgets, are being 
sold down the river to spend their very limited funding not on books 
and magazines, but on computers, CD-ROMs, and computer technicians to 
keep their workstations running," said Stoll. The author said it 
"breaks my heart" that by abandoning their core purpose - namely to 
get good books into the hands of readers - libraries are being 
"chewed out" from the inside.

"Frankly, I'd rather visit a library stocked with lots of books and a 
competent librarian than one with online catalogs, CD-ROMs, 
terminals, and fewer books."
"That's what I fear ... the library of the future. It cannot happen, 
for reasons of cost, copyright, and preservation. Butin the rush to 
get there, we'll spend barbarous gobs of money on electronics, and a 
pittance on books and librarians...
The result won't be a library without books - it'll be a library 
without value."
